Cut both ends out of a coffee can, push it a couple of inches into the turf at the edge of the damage where the grass is still partly green, fill it with water and wait. Chinch bugs float, and small dark insects with white wing markings on the surface are your answer. Treating them is the easy half. What matters is why they picked your lawn, because chinch bugs favour thatch, a mow height that is too low and hot dry edges, and all three are fixable. We treat, correct the conditions, and check the same strip on the follow-up rather than assuming it worked. They are not the only thing out here. White grubs chew roots until sod lifts off the soil like a rug, and they usually announce themselves as a raccoon problem before anyone notices the grass. Fall armyworms can strip a lawn in about two days and move across a yard as a visible front. Sod webworms leave notched, ragged blades and small green pellets. Mole crickets tunnel and loosen the surface. Fire ants are their own separate program, and on a property with kids or a play field they are usually the first priority. Disease is the other half of the diagnosis and is easy to mistake for insects. Large patch appears on St. Augustine in cool damp weather as expanding circles with an orange margin. Take-all root rot hits high-pH lawns and thins the turf while roots go short and dark, which is a common outcome on unamended Upper Valley soil. Gray leaf spot follows heavy nitrogen in humid weather. Each needs a different response and none of them respond to insecticide.
